All About Sewing Machine Bobbins
The next lesson in our short course, “Introduction to Sewing Machines” dives into mysterious details of winding sewing machine bobbins.
A bobbin full of thread set under the needle is the partner to the spool of thread fed down from the top of the machine. Bringing the two threads together with the needle in the middle is a magical skill, but not hard to learn.
This microlesson will get you on the right track, so when you attend a workshop and sit down with a machine, you’ll immediately feel more familiar and comfortable.
Why Is It Called A Sewing Machine Bobbin?
Do you know where the term “bobbin” came from? Its rooted in an old Latin word “babulus” which means just what it sounds like: “babbler.” There’s lots of variation through different languages, all coming down to baby talk, prattling away, idle chatter and such. Some figured that was the sound coming from this busy little wheel full of thread, and so we have a “bobbin.”
