Selecting the Sewing Thread
Selecting the Sewing Thread
We’ve just released a draft version of Lesson 2: Selecting the Thread, in our short course “Introduction to Sewing”. In this five-minute micro-lesson, we’ll take a look at the different types of sewing threads used in typical projects. Then, the learner gets to match best type of thread to use with various common fabrics.
Knowing Types of Sewing Threads – Lesson Overview
In this micro-lesson, the focus in on the importance of knowing which thread is best for a sewing project. Choosing the right fabric is important of course, but you wouldn’t want to use embroidery thread for a sweater.
This short lesson covers all purpose thread to embroidery floss that’s only meant for hand but not machine sewing. See how to match fibers in thread to fibers in fabrics, and how heavier duty threads are useful in top-stitching for garment seams. Some sewing machines take spools of thread in different ways; some vertically and others, horizontally. We’ll look at both.
Before a new learner comes to a maker space hands on workshop to spend time operating a machine, it's good to first understand that thread is an equal partner with fabric.
